Thank you to everyone who filled out our recent survey – this helps us to advocate for the things that matter most to you. Our mission is advocacy for end-of-life options and that encompasses a wide range of topics. This survey focused a lot on the specifics of medical aid in dying (MAID) including the safeguards, legalities, and qualification requirements for individuals seeking MAID.
What you told us is that having autonomy over end-of-life decisions is important whether the individual lives at home or in some sort of care setting such as hospice or palliative care. You also told us that quality of life matters a lot, including experiencing pain or other debilitating symptoms. Like many other medications, our survey results show support for MAID medications coming in the form of pills or liquids or injections. End-of-life care can be expensive, and you told us you believe care such as hospice & palliative care, at home or in a facility, should be paid for by insurance as should MAID medication.
Many objections to legal access to MAID are centered on the idea of individuals being pressured to use MAID or the decision being made rashly. You told us that you support procedural safeguards to MAID, ensuring that individuals are not being pressured or making a decision without consideration.
We appreciate your time and willingness to share your thoughts with us. This helps us to better advocate for North Carolinians and provide education on topics you want to know more about. Our work continues and we thank you for your support!
